Donetsk Paramedic Program

As we left Ukraine in October 2022, out of supplies and out of time, we met a group of paramedics working the Donetsk region. Many had lived in Mariupol and had lost everything. They asked for supplies and training so while traveling home I contacted Utah Valley University EMS program where I had attended years prior. An instructor and trauma RN, Rick Howard, responded and volunteered personally to help provide this group with training. Through his connections 2 paramedics from West Valley City, Marcie Mehl and Brandon Howard, also joined our effort. These volunteers were able to provide about $20k in medical supplies and provide hands on skills training in Donetsk. I could not have asked for better qualified individuals for the job!

This paramedic group in Donetsk has become a focus of our aid because they are responding to civilian attacks in the areas currently affected by Russia’s latest acts of terror. We now have a program dedicated specifically to help them with supplies and medical training. This March, we partnered with Spilka NYC, an NGO aiding Ukraine, to raise more funds for this group. Through this effort we were able to send out a shipment of supplies, which should be arriving any day.

A brief note I feel is important: Unless we are asked to physically go to Ukraine, such as for our hands on training, we try to send aid. I think its pretty important to understand that most of the time donating is the best way to help Ukraine. Obviously there are some skill sets that are much appreciated, but for many, you do not have to feel helpless; just find a cause you believe in and donate if and when you can. Care and spread information and awareness, support the Ukrainian people, support Ukrainian businesses etc. All great ways to stay involved. More people on the ground does not necessarily mean more help. Most of the time it is best to allocate funds directly to supplies and not to travel etc. That is why No Apathy was formed, we wanted a sustainable way to help and to know that our funds were getting to those who need it most.
